The Wyoming Association of Secondary School Principals (WASSP) annually honors exceptional leaders with the Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year awards. These prestigious awards recognize school leaders who demonstrate extraordinary leadership, commitment, and dedication to their students, staff, and school communities.
The selection process begins with nominations from fellow principals across the state, who identify peers that stand out for their ability to inspire, lead, and drive success within their schools. These nominees are individuals who not only excel in their roles but also represent the best of Wyoming, exemplifying the values of integrity, resilience, and community that define our state.
Each year, the winners of these awards showcase what it means to lead with courage and conviction, reflecting the principles of the Code of the West and a relentless dedication to the students and families of Wyoming.
The Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year winners embody the spirit of our state’s educators, setting a standard of excellence and innovation that drives student achievement and strengthens our schools.
Mountain View Principal Named Principal of the Year
May 15, 2023 Ben Carr, principal of Mountain View High School, has been named the 2023 State Principal of the Year by the Wyoming Association of Secondary School Principals. Carr will join his fellow state principals of the year from across the country in October for consideration as 2023 National Principal of the Year, conducted by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
“Ben Carr personifies all that is great about educational leadership. His dedication and commitment to our students and community is unmatched. His passion for doing what is best for kids earns him the respect and appreciation of fellow staff members and parents in our school community. The integrity and humility that he demonstrates each day is a great example to all of us. He has made a tremendous impact throughout our school district and entire community during his fourteen years in Mountain View. It is both a privilege and a pleasure to work alongside Ben each day. I can think of no one more deserving of this prestigious honor and recognition.”
“Every year, NASSP is proud to honor the principals who are making a difference in the lives of their staff and students through outstanding educational leadership,” says NASSP CEO Ronn Nozoe. “The state principals of the year have made tremendous strides in one of the most difficult times ever experienced by the American education community. We salute these leaders and celebrate the incredible work they are doing to help their students and educators survive and thrive.”
The NASSP National Principal of the Year program convenes the year’s top principal from each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, the Department of Defense Education Activity, and the U.S. Department of State Office of Overseas Schools at a four-day institute, taking place this fall. During the event, principals will meet with their elected officials to discuss legislation that impacts education, participate in professional learning, network with NASSP staff and their peers, and be officially recognized for their achievements during an awards program.
The 2023 NASSP National Principal of the Year will be announced at the winner’s school during National Principals Month in October.
